A few habits at home protect the work we do at the bench. Here is how we clean and store precious metals and stones between visits — straight from the Sarasota atelier.
Platinum
Platinum develops a natural patina with wear. Clean with mild dish soap and water; bring it in for a professional re-polish when the finish dulls.
Sterling Silver
Silver tarnishes fast in air. Store in anti-tarnish pouches or cloths, keep it away from rubber and latex, and buff with a silver cloth — never chemical dips.
Diamonds
Diamonds attract grease. Soak in warm water with a drop of dish soap, brush gently, and rinse. Store alone — a diamond will scratch every other gem.
Colored & Organic Stones
Emeralds, opals, and pearls never go in an ultrasonic. Wipe with a damp soft cloth, avoid heat and chemicals, and store padded and away from direct light.
Smart Storage
Keep pieces separate in soft pouches or a compartmented box. Add anti-tarnish strips for silver, and never let pearls press against metal.
Daily Wear Routine
Last on, first off. Put jewelry on after cosmetics and perfume, and remove it before swimming, exercising, or cleaning with harsh chemicals.
Bench Inspections
Bring worn-daily pieces in every six months. A free bench check catches loose stones and thinning prongs long before a stone is at risk.
